The midwest's best 80's band, The Reaganomics, are a group of musicians specializing in eighties rock. The Fixx and Duran Duran were prime examples of groups that had wide appeal and received substantial airplay on MTV. New Wave, however, encompassed a wider range than the dance music that proceeded it. The best example of this musical trend was eighties New Wave, which was essentially modernized seventies Disco. If rock music of the seventies was a statement of excess and overproduction, eighties rock only furthered those excesses. My Favorite (Local) 80's Cover Band~The Reaganomics! Origins trace back to the beginning of the decade when the "Yuppie Handbook" was written identifying the breed. "You see that guy in the Saab, he's such a yuppie." A person who is a white collar worker who has possessions of an expensive nature and flaunts them. Originated from Saturday Night Live sketch with Jon Lovitz who was a habitual liar in the sketch. Usually an indication that an explanation was just created. "So she said, 'I really like your purse' and I'm like 'Whatever!'" Usually used in a condescending tone by a Valley Girl. Universally used for anything that leaves even an ounce of doubt in your mind. "I saw your girlfriend with another guy" "No Way" "Way" "No Way" "Way" (1)An exchange between two people when one believes something the other does not. "I'm a Val, I know, but it's ok because I come from a real cool part of Encino." Something truly exceptional, not flawed in any ways. Used in conjunction with any adjective that you want to emphasize. Something extremely hip, almost awsome ie. Origins can be traced to an Eddie Murphy comedy sketch. Person offers an ice cream cone, and then pulls it away, he would then yell "Psyche!". "That guy wearing the Izods is such a preppie." A person who dressed in upscale clothing and acted snobbish towards people not in the same social standings. "I got tickets to Duran Duran." "No Way!" "Bill Gates is one of the most successful nerds today." Someone who is very smart and socially unacceptable. ex: "Nice move McFly" origin is the 80's movie, Back to the future. Someone has just done something very stupid. "I just bought a new Englebert Humperdink album." "Oh, don't play it. Sometimes used as "Make me wanna barf." ie. A way to signal disgust with a situation. "I was all like, No Way" Used mostly in Valley Girl speak, it was the most widely used aspect of this stereotype. Used as a modifier, really has no definition. Origins of phrase trace back to the seventies on "Alice's Diner", it was a carry over for a few years into the eighties. A more polite way of saying "kiss my ass." "That move you just did with your board was gnarly." A person who is not hip, usually implies stupidity as well. "Do you want to meet Duran Duran?" "Fer Sure!" "Only a dufus would play with matches." or "Don't be a dufus." Used to describe a place or thing as cool as someone dubbed a "dude ". Origins of this context word can be traced to California. "Take a Chill Pill! You're gonna get us all busted." "Aw man, that cop took my board." "Bogus!" Something extremely good, and exceptional example. "Hey why don't you go out with that guy in the Izod shirt?" "AS IF!" Tell me who doesn't remember John Cusack standing with the boom box over his head professing his LOVE!?!? The main characters of Say Anything are as carefully drawn as any you'll find in contemporary film, a real counterpoint to the abundance of John Hughes productions making light and cheap of the terrors and rewards of living in modern American society, especially as a young person. Cusack spends the rest of the shrinking summer trying to win her attentions back. Her father sees Cusack as the exact wrong thing at this moment in her life and the relationship between father and daughter is tested, and prevails. Say Anything stars Ione Skye as an over-achieving high-school graduate soon to head to England for a scholarship, and John Cusack as the ne'er do well Army brat she has started dating. This is one of my favorite Movies from the 80's.
